M51 System
The M51 system photometry is computed using
a large elliptical aperture, centered on M51a, fully covering both
galaxy components: M51a + M51b.
- Aperture: semi-major axis = 384 arcsec, axis ratio = 0.80, position angle = 15 deg.
- Results:
J = 6.04 +- 0.02 mag
H = 5.31 +- 0.02 mag
Ks = 5.10 +- 0.02 mag
The system photometry is consistent (to within 10%) of the values
if you simply add the galaxy component fluxes together.
Since deblending/decoupling of the components is limited, the large
aperture results given above should be the most
reliable for the system as a whole.
