M51 System

The M51 system photometry is computed using a large elliptical aperture, centered on M51a, fully covering both galaxy components: M51a + M51b.

The system photometry is consistent (to within 10%) of the values if you simply add the galaxy component fluxes together. Since deblending/decoupling of the components is limited, the large aperture results given above should be the most reliable for the system as a whole.
